A Slightly Tainted Hero

A humorous yet philosophical look at an accountant’s late-in-life romp with marriage, money and his 15 minutes of fame.

Dave Lockwood is an accountant. He just turned sixty and he’s feeling old--mainly in body rather than mind. Then there’s his office manager, Irene Blanchard. She’s about twenty years younger, about the age Dave’s mind seems to think it is as it valiantly labours to adjust to his ‘maturing’ body. Which is why he unwisely confronts a mugger while escorting Irene to an underground parking lot in downtown Edmonton. Oh, and the mugger is armed.

Blind panic follows as shots ring out and somehow Dave becomes an overnight hero. In fact, he’s shocked to find that he’s now a successful, wounded, nationally known hero. But instant fame has its drawbacks as Dave’s past sins slowly emerge from behind a long closed door. Louise, his wife of thirty-six years, is not pleased. Neither, it seems, is anyone else as the fallout spreads: his partners at work, the police, the mugger’s family, and even Dave himself.

This novel takes an often humorous, sometimes thoughtful look at the bittersweet irony when the good things in life turn out, as they often do, to be ‘Slightly Tainted’. Or, as Dave likes to put it: “Every silver lining has a cloud!”

Politically Detained

Across Canada people gripe about politicians, but never do anything about it. There’s a reason: they can’t. So why try? After all, how do you form a special interest group when you’re in the majority? How do you get the message to the elected if it costs votes? How do you fight apathy when so many people are too busy to care?

The answer…you’ve gotta have a cause; you’ve gotta have a plan; and you’ve gotta have the right people. A disgruntled Minister of Finance, determined to step down in a reckless burst of glory; a half dozen well-heeled seniors with influence who are not afraid to use it; a reluctant Member of Parliament, accidentally caught up in their web of intrigue; three spectacularly unfair federal policies that cost billions; a novel plan to reform the federal electoral system and, what the heck, the senate too. It’s a good place to start....

Eboracum, Carved in Stone Book (III)

A new century dawns and the northern frontiers of Britain are again in turmoil. The year is A.D.105 and Trajan is calling in troops to secure Dacia…leaving Britain’s armies under strength. Cethen Lamh-Fada finds his family once more straddling both sides of Rome’s ambition as two sons help guide the fate of the legions, and two more try to hold them at bay. The final novel in the Eboracum trilogy is written with the same unique approach to the history of the times: there are no bold heroes, no vile villains, just ordinary people such as ourselves, who happen to live in far more difficult times. Eboracum, No Turning Back Book (IV)

Another century, another era. The story of Eboracum moves forward nearly three hundred years. It is AD 388, and another twenty years will see Roman troops gone forever. On the continent General Magnus Maximus is defeated and executed, after taking the legions from Britain five years earlier in a brief but successful attempt to secure part of the western empire. It’s the beginning of the end, as most of Britain’s army is commandeered to defend Rome. There is no turning back, neither for Rome, nor the Roman decanus Duagald (Dag) Arbitius, as he faces harsh choices when defending his family against Pict raiders on the coast east of Eboracum. As Rome’s reduced Auxiliary forces struggle to cope with increasing hostilities in the north of Britain, and as the Christian church firmly entrenches its toehold on Rome’s frontier, a common Roman soldier is forced by circumstance to aid and abet the Picts to the north. Once again, the story highlights the paradoxes, ironies and the dark humour of life’s unfair choices.

The Sound of Silence

The Sound of Silence

Silence is the strongest ally of the pedophile. It is, in fact, his only ally.  He (nearly all pedophiles are ‘he’) relies on silence. He’s helped by the fact that his sordid actions instill needless shame in young victims, an emption that will often keep them silent forever. This is why one pedophile’s victims will often number in the hundreds--and most will never say a word.

The author remained silent for more than twenty years, as did the other victims in the family in which he was raised. The silence was so deep, that not until two of  them reached adulthood did the siblings together realize their father was what he was, and that each of them was not alone in that knowledge. Even then they remained silent--for another two decades. It was a silence broken only by a call from the police.  That silence haunts them still, for it should never have been...

The book is a pragmatic (but not graphic) account of dysfunction: sexual abuse; the unusual family conditions that helped foment it; and its final resolution through the courts, both divorce and criminal. The author writes candidly, offering commentary and statistics on pedophilia, and the effect on its victims.
